About Descendant Cellars

Inspired by the traditional wines of France's Rhône Valley, Descendant Cellars has spent more than a decade demonstrating how beautifully those varieties thrive in Washington. Founded in 2012 by Mike and Chris Rupp, the family-owned winery was born from a passion for minimal-intervention winemaking and a belief that exceptional vineyards deserve to be the focus of every bottle. Rather than shaping wines to fit a predetermined style, Descendant allows the fruit and vintage to tell their own story through careful, hands-on craftsmanship.

Rhône varietals remain the heart of the winery's portfolio, with Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Rhône-style blends leading the way alongside select Bordeaux varieties. Grapes are sourced from acclaimed vineyards throughout Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, Walla Walla Valley, and Yakima Valley, giving visitors the opportunity to experience how Washington's diverse growing regions influence each wine. Gentle winemaking techniques, restrained oak use, and small production lots create wines that are expressive, balanced, and designed to pair naturally with food.

Every tasting reflects the founders' philosophy that great wine doesn't need unnecessary intervention to stand out. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it easy to enjoy a thoughtful conversation about vineyards, vintages, and Rhône-inspired winemaking while discovering a side of Washington wine that feels both distinctive and approachable.
